Birds in the Park is a Heritage Lottery Funded Project which provides all the above and more for young people.

The main focus of the project will be on Alexandra Park, which is to be found in North Belfast. At present the park is not overly used by the local residents but more so by young people during the weekend. It would be envisaged that this project might go some way to introducing young people and local residents to what can only be described as an opportunity to be developed.

STAGE ONE: The young people will undertake a survey to identify what type of bird species are presently existing in Alexandra Park .They will also undertake a similar survey with the Waterworks to gauge similarities and differences .Local people will be involved in a ‘snap-shot’ survey to gauge their knowledge of bird Life.

STAGE TWO: Young people will record this information and present it to the local residents in the form of a book/magazine to raise awareness of bird life in the area of Alexandra Park . There may also be a DVD.

STAGE THREE: The young people will work along side volunteers in creating a habitat that will encourage the growth of bird life in Alexandra Park. This will involve providing nesting boxes, shrubs/bushes for feeding etc.

STAGE FOUR: The young people will develop a Bird Trail in the grounds of Alexandra Park so that local young people will be able to enhance their knowledge of bird life. This will be supported by the development of a web site dedicated to the project.

The benefits that this project will bring to Alexandra Park and the local area are immense. It will hopefully increase the awareness of the park and the bird life that exists within it.
